Samsung Unveils Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Package for $249, Deal Lasts Just 2 Weeks

The Galaxy Note 10.1 might be Samsung’s hot new tablet, but the firm just announced an amazing deal for anyone interested in its smaller, less powerful Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 device. Beginning on August 19th, and for two weeks only, Samsung will sell the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition that comes packaged with a USB adapter, a unique white color scheme and a keyboard dock. The best part? This package costs $249.99, the exact price you would pay if you wanted just the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

We reviewed the tab back in April and, as a quick refresher, it runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and is equipped with a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, GPS, 8GB of build-in storage, a microSD card slot for adding up to 32GB of storage, an IR blaster for controlling your TV, USB 2.0, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 7-inch display with a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution. Honestly, it’s not a bad package considering that you’re getting $100 worth of accessories for just $50 more than the 8GB Nexus 7, which doesn’t offer a rear-facing camera or expandable storage. The trade-off, of course, is that the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 doesn’t run Jelly Bean.

Samsung said the deal will be available from Best Buy, Amazon, Tiger Direct, Costco and Fry’s

OnLive Closing Down, Reborn as OnLive?

Rumors have been circulating most of the day that cloud gaming service OnLive was going into bankruptcy, but it appears the truth may indeed be stranger than fiction.

Through out the day there have been rumors that have ranged from all of the employees of OnLive being let go to the company going into bankruptcy protection. Up until now the company was very vague as to what was happening except to say that the gaming service was not shutting down.

The company has finally released a statement that still is somewhat vague, but does confirm that it has been purchased by a newly-formed company and will have “substantial funding.” It did confirm that some employees were let go, but it did not state how many people exactly were impacted.

OnLive says that its gaming service will continue to operate and that all announced projects, such as the one with OUYA, will continue as originally announced.

There are sure to be some more shake outs from this very suddenly announced deal, but for now it appears that if you use OnLive that you will ce able to continue doing so.

Motorola and Verizon Holding Press Event in NYC on September 5

Motorola and Verizon Wireless just announced a press event at 2:00 p.m. EST on September 5. That’s the same day that Nokia and Microsoft have an event too, which means we’re looking at an incredibly exciting fall ahead of us. If we had one guess as to what will be on display, it’s that the two firms will finally announce the Motorola DROID RAZR HD, which has been spilling all over the internet for the past several months. TechnoBuffalo will be there, so stay tuned for live coverage of whatever breaks cover.

AT&T to Enable Facetime over 3G for Mobile Share Customers

AT&T just announced that its customers will soon be able to place Facetime calls over its 3G network. There’s a small catch, however; those interested in doing so will be required to have a subscription to one of AT&T’s new Mobile Share data plans.

The feature will not work over 3G if you’re currently subscribed to AT&T’s older, non-Mobile Share plans, so it’s pretty clear that AT&T is trying to entice new and existing subscribers to its new subscription options with incentives such as this.

“AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value,” an AT&T spokesperson told TechnoBuffalo. “With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.” The spokesperson didn’t say when the option would be available, but we imagine it will hit when the plans launch on August 23.

Just the Fax, Ma’am — Why Won’t This Archaic Technology Die Already?

I don’t get it. Cassettes have come and gone, pagers are totally archaic, the Post Office is sinking like theTitanic, and yet fax machines are somehow still wheezing along in these digital times. While email and other messaging services kill snail mail and phone calls, it’s kind of unbelievable that those old paper-driven machines have survived.
I blame the banking industry. A few weeks ago, I needed a copy of a cashed check dating back a few years. (I won’t bore you with the details, but I got into a snit with a company that claimed I never paid them for services. A copy of the deposited check would settle our silly ”Yes, I did!” / “No, you didn’t!” kerfluffle.) Problem was, my online account couldn’t provide downloadable copies dating back that far. So I contacted the bank, and the rep was willing to send it to me — via snail mail or fax

HP Creates New Mobility Unit Focused on Consumer Tablets

An internal memo circulating through HP suggests the company has created a new Mobility business unit that will focus on consumer tablets and other unannounced projects. The branch will reportedly be helmed by former Nokia MeeGo vet Alberto Torres beginning in September, with HP’s Todd Bradley overseeing operations.
HP currently has a  although the new division will apparently have no affect on its arrival. With the TouchPad a distant memory, and webOS being, it’s unclear what direction Torres and Bradley will take the new venture.
“With this move, we are building on our commitment to re-invest in mobility via dedicated leadership, focused research and development, amazing new products and a growing suite of applications and services,” Bradley said in the company memo.
We should know more come September, when the new unit officially beings work

Lenovo Unveils Its First Quad-Core Smartphone, The IdeaPhone K860

Lenovo has unveiled its first quad-core smartphone in China today. Labeled the IdeaPhone K860, its highlights include a Samsung Exynos processor, a 5-inch 720p display, and 1GB of RAM. The only downside: Lenovo hasn’t said whether the device will be available outside of China.
All we know is, it should be. With those specifications, the IdeaPhone K860 has the internals to give other high-end Android smartphones — like the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X — a little bit of competition. It’s also a rather attractive handset, sporting a sleek and subtle design that isn’t too extravagant — and I mean that in a good way.
In addition to its quad-core processor, the IdeaPhone K860 packs 1GB of RAM, a 5-inch 1280 x 720 display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with an LED flash and 1080p video recording, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. All of that is powered by a 2,250 mAh battery.
